The Imaban Gbo are an ethnic community in southeastern Nigeria, associated with the Cross River cultural region. They speak the Legbo (Gbo) language, part of the Niger-Congo language family, and are sometimes identified by related names such as Imaban or Itigidi. Their communities developed in forested areas of Cross River and Ebonyi states and share historical and cultural ties with nearby Igbo-related peoples. The language and culture reflect the wider Cross River and Benue cultural clusters of Nigeria.
Most Imaban Gbo families live in rural villages where farming is the primary occupation. Crops such as cassava, yams, and vegetables are commonly grown, while small trading and local markets support the village economy. Families are usually extended, with several relatives living close together and cooperating in daily work. Traditional foods often include yam dishes, soups, and cassava-based meals. Community life centers on family gatherings, village meetings, and cultural celebrations that include music, storytelling, and seasonal festivals.
Christianity is the dominant religion among the Imaban Gbo, and many communities have churches and Christian influence in daily life. However, traditional beliefs sometimes remain alongside Christian practice, including respect for ancestors and spiritual forces common in surrounding cultures. In nearby Igbo traditions, a creator God and spiritual beings are acknowledged, reflecting older religious patterns that may still influence worldview.
Stronger biblical discipleship and leadership training would help believers grow in maturity and share their faith effectively within their communities. Greater access to Scripture in the local language would deepen understanding of the gospel and strengthen churches. Improved economic opportunities, education, and healthcare would contribute to the well-being of families and reduce hardship in rural areas.
Pray that the Imaban Gbo church will grow in spiritual depth and biblical understanding.
Pray that scripture resources in the Legbo language will become widely available and used in homes and churches.
Pray asking God to raise up local leaders who will disciple others and participate in mission in and beyond their communities.
Pray also for improved education, health services, and sustainable livelihoods for families.
